Volodymyr Lytvyn: "The Day of Partisan Glory deserves National Attention"
Today, Volodymyr Lytvyn, Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, attended the ceremony dedicated to the Partisan Glory Day. The holiday was established by the President´s Decree in 2001 to commemorate the deeds of partisans and members of underground organizations in the period of the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945.
V.Lytvyn took part in the ceremonial procession together with the veterans of war and partisan movement, People´s Deputies, representatives of the President´s Secretariat and the Government. He also lay flowers to the monument to the Unknown Soldier and met the representatives of the veteran organizations.
The Head of the Parliaments admitted that the present-day youth knew little about the events of the war. He believes that today´s holiday should become a remembrance day of those times and people who sacrificed their lives for the sake of future generations. "All the leaders of the country should have attended this holiday, as it deserves the nation-wide attention. It should be a holiday not only for the defenders of the Motherland", - stated V.Lytvyn.
According to V.Lytvyn, The Verkhovna Rada exerts every effort to support the activity of the panel in charge of former partisans. He regretted that the country failed to launch the preparation for the 65th anniversary of liberation of Ukraine from the fascist occupants. "The present-day authorities seem to neglect this matter, as they are willing to celebrate other dates irregardless of people´s memory", - stated V.Lytvyn.
